Rhaedalyn

Fort Weyrwoman
of Gold Aradissicath
One Night Respite [R'nya] [Gold Flight]
« on: 22 Mar 2015 at 02:21 AM »
The day had started out much the same as the ones before it with Alyren waking early and Rhaedalyn tending to her needs and then her own. The usual chores followed with laundry, some cooking, and baths for them all – including Aradissicath as she grumpily insisted on one after stating she felt neglected. That was when the day started to veer from the norm and Rhaedalyn slowly started to grow suspicious.

By the time dinner rolled around, the goldrider noticed some of the male dragons watching Aradissicath, who seemed rather content to sit and preen under all of the attention, showing off her hide that was nearly blinding in the sun. It was enough to voice her concern to Kahleena and, finally, far too worried about what it would mean if her dragon did fly, Rhaedalyn went to one of the crèche workers and asked to have Alyren watched for the night. It was always hard to part with her baby girl, though the time apart usually wasn’t that long, and she had good people to watch Alyren. Usually she’d ask Volfetti since she was good with kids and had morals that she respected but the woman had persuaded R’nd to watch their son for the night so she could have a little time to herself so it wasn’t fair to ask her to suddenly watch an infant.

Rhaedalyn had ended up taking another bath that night simply to unwind without having to worry about Alyren near the water and took great pains to ignore Aradissicath’s swinging mood. When a decent time for bed finally hit, Rhaedalyn frowned, wondering when her dragon would fly. Aradissicath gave her an answer soon after she snuggled in under the blanket, looking forward to a full night’s rest. She sighed, cringing slightly as she wondered who would give chase, and hoped Xyreith wasn’t mad at either of them. Having only two flights under her belt thus far, Rhaedalyn had to admit, it was nice to have R’nya be the man beside her both times and wanted to continue that lucky streak.

From the weight of the day, the flight’s activities, and the added exhaustion that hit her as the adrenaline started to wear off, Rhaedalyn was ready to curl up where she was, how she was, and sleep for at least three days. She remembered seeing R’nya’s face in the group of suitors but the thrill of the chase and the lust that consumed her after had obscured the memory about who had actually grabbed her. So before sleeping and possibly missing who it was on the other side of her bed, Rhaedalyn turned from lying on one side to the other so she could get a proper look.

A smile appeared as she saw R’nya and she reached out to lightly sweep aside his bangs so she could admire him in full. R’nya was perhaps the hardest working man she knew, always right down to business and with a serious expression etched onto his face. It was nice when she could see him in his down time where he seemed a bit more relaxed and closer to showing emotions that would bring him closer to smiling. His face in that moment was even better than the days they lounged by the lake or on a picnic. It was blissful and seemed genuinely happy. Rhaedalyn didn’t consider herself an expert on men, especially after the mess with Z’ia, but she did like to think she knew the bronzerider beside her better than most and she was relieved to see that he wasn’t angry or annoyed. Their last flight had ended with a quick retreat from the man and so far he didn’t seem to be in any hurry which was also a welcomed sign.

Suddenly realising that she was staring and her nude form was mostly exposed, Rhaedalyn laughed nervously and ducked her head to hide her embarrassment. She had been lucky after giving birth, keeping to something akin to her pre-pregnancy body. She still had a few pounds to shed before she was happy but it was still odd to have someone see her body in its current shape. In a way, she was embarrassed over the fact that her breasts hadn’t really increased in size and she didn’t have any extra curves that some of the mothers roaming around had. She was still rather plain and almost a plank of wood. At least she didn’t have any stretch marks. One of the other women saw her at the baths not too long ago and made a comment about being jealous. Rhaedalyn suspected she had just been lucky this time and if she had another child, it would be a lot rougher on her just to spite her.

“Dissi has wonderful timing, doesn’t she?” Rhaedalyn spoke softly, hoping to detract from her sudden shyness and forced herself to look back up at R’nya. “I hope we didn’t interrupt any plans you had for tonight.” She knew R’nya went to bed earlier than most so there was a strong chance he had been in bed as well, which was bad enough to interrupt and no doubt half of the Weyr would be cranky with her at breakfast, but Rhaedalyn really hoped there hadn’t been any other plans ruined.

R’nya had not even been in the Weyr for the past several days. After setting up D’hys to keep track of both Katila but mostly the various members of their wing, R’nya had given in to the teasing comments from Quilriana and taken a holiday, if only for a few days, and it had been quite lovely to get out of the Weyr and away from the various responsibilities that it entailed. Mostly, R’nya had enjoyed himself, though the children Quilriana called her own made him quietly sad to be away from Alyren, and he was particularly and uncomfortably aware that Quilriana wasn’t Rhaedalyn, the bronzerider had thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them. Besides – he was only a few seconds away from anyone that wanted him, via dragon or firelizard. Right?

It was entirely possibly R’nya would have missed Aradissicath’s flight – a horrific scenario R’nya did not dare imagine – had it not been for a green Weyrling that had been sent to inform him of the gold dragon’s warning glow. The bronzerider wasn’t entirely sure which member of Katila had sent the young man to find him, but he suspected D’hys had been behind it, to some degree, though he doubted the bluerider would own up to it without good cause. Not that it mattered who had sent the messenger, it was the message that mattered at that moment.

R’nya, tense but otherwise as polite as ever had thanked Quilriana before leaving on ‘weyr business’; he did not wish to lie to her, but nor could he risk missing the flight that was clearly going to occur sometime very soon. He had tousled the kids’ hair as he had walked out the door, walking at a fast march to where Xyreith was anxiously dancing in the nearest empty square, which was technically not big enough for the large dragon. R’nya threw himself aboard the strapless dragon with ease, his gear still kept neatly in Quilriana’s home. He was not sure when Aradissicath would take to the sky, but he certainly did not need her doing so while he tried to strip riding gear of his great bronze!

Their messenger had not been overly early in informing them of Aradissicath’s pending state, and they arrived in early evening. Xyreith, making his way to the golden beauty he considered his quietly informed R’nya that he did, indeed, have time for a bath and probably something to eat. Aradissicath did not look to be in any particular hurry. The bronze dragon settled himself down almost out of sight of the gold, but with her clearly in his line of sight, and waited.

R’nya had time for a quality bath, food, and to catch up with D’hys well before Aradissicath decided to take to the skies. He likely would have gone to bed, figuring the gold would fly the next morning, but Xyreith had snorted, filled with contempt for that train of thought, and R’nya had stayed up, working on reports for S’kef.

~ + ~ + ~

Generally, R’nya was quick to regain his sense of self after a flight, and was usually out the door before the other person (particularly if it was a male rider) was really awake enough to know who their partner was without gossiping with their dragons and other riders. After a long, tense day though, R’nya had fallen into a peaceful albeit shallow sleep. He and Xyreith had succeeded, capturing the lovely pair without any serious (in their minds) competition from the other bronzes. Xyreith was bubbling over with smugness, and R’nya was delighted – though he would have been genuinely embarrassed to know his pleasure was in any way visible on his face.

The sudden sound of laughter caused the bronzerider to stir lazily, lashes fluttering before revealing pale eyes, which blinked with a slight frown in the darkness, waiting for his vision to adjust to the lack of light. “She does,” R’nya murmured in reply, eyes adjusted enough to see more than just the flash of white from Rhaedalyn’s eyes or teeth as she spoke. The pale of her face gave her features more shape in the darkness, and R’nya reached across to gently brush a curl of hair from her cheek. Fingers lingered with a soft touch, tracing the edge of her jaw, before he remembered himself and slowly withdrew his hand. He cleared his throat, shifting to lie on his back he brought his far leg up, tenting the bedding over his knee. He did not trust his body, especially not with Rhaedalyn being so lovely, so close and so very naked…

“No,” he shook his head, less in reply to Rhaedalyn’s question and more to send inappropriate thoughts of the young woman fleeing. She had not interrupted anything at all, not when one knew the only reason he and Xyreith had come back at all was because Aradissicath was moments away from her flight!

This was our plans for the night, Xyreith put in quite smugly, speaking to both humans, and rumbled with amusement at R’nya’s reaction.

The bronzerider gave a throaty little squeak at his bronze’s comment, able to tell by the way he spoke that Rhaedalyn had been included in the broadcast, his whole body flushing hot with embarrassment. He opened his mouth to speak, twisting to look up at Rhaedalyn with an expression not at all far off mortified terror, even as he realised he had absolutely no idea what it was he wanted to say. Xyreith had, after all, told the truth, and R’nya had no desire to lie to Rhaedalyn, not even to save his own arse.

Rhaedalyn

Rhaedalyn giggled at Xyreith’s statement and the way R’nya looked like he wanted to protest but ended up floundering instead. “Is that so?” Aradissicath’s confidence and the lingering lust of flight had bolstered Rhaedalyn enough for her to make such a teasing comment and she even managed to avoid flushing with embarrassment as she did so. She wasn’t known for being flirty and she was among the first to admit she didn’t really have any social skills when it came to talking with men on a romantic level – or even on a friendship level until she knew them a bit more – but this time, it seemed right and felt natural to say.

Because it is R’nya. It seems hard to do wrong when it comes to him. Aradissicath lazily commented on the situation, pleased that her rider was feeling far more comfortable around someone again but also not entirely interested after her own excitement of the evening. She didn’t even put up a playful protest of Xyreith making himself at home beside her. Truth was, she was fond of the bronze. He was a good flight partner, giving a good chase and capture, and his antics towards R’nya was always amusing. It was a shame he acted like a toddler at times with trying to get to her. In the end, though, it was a part of his charm and even that game was fun.

“I’m glad that they were and that you made it home in time.” She bit her lip as she thought about what she wanted to say. She was fairly certain it had been said before and it didn’t seem like it had gone over well – or at least something in that conversation had sent R’nya fleeing from the room – but Rhaedalyn wanted to make sure the bronzerider knew how special he was to her.

The sheet was tugged up to arrange it to cover a bit more of her body and fingers worried the material for several seconds as a substitute for playing with her – a habit that was lost when the curls were chopped off but would likely return once they grew out a bit more. “I like that you always win the flights. You always seem to know what’s best and what’s needed so you’d know what I’d want in a flight partner,” and even though it was R’nya, she still ended up a bit sore but she couldn’t imagine what it’d be like with someone else and what shape she’d be in then. After another slight pause, she dared to add, “and how nice the after times are.” Her awkwardness returned and Rhaedalyn blushed and ducked her head again, suddenly aware she was making a fool out of herself but unable to stop it.

“I’m sorry. I’m being silly and living in daydreams again, I think.” She loved her happy land of daydreams but Rhaedalyn suspected she was romanticising random things again and it possibly wouldn’t be appreciated. No doubt she looked like a foolish child in R’nya’s eyes, no matter how accepting he was of her quirks or Aradissicath’s insistence that no wrong could be done.

R’nya relaxed at Rhaedalyn’s teasing words, a small, crooked smile tugging up one corner of his lips as he arched an eyebrow in the most R’nya of ways. He was more than slightly charmed by the gentle flirting, but it had taken him by surprise and so a response was slow to come to him, and instead allowed Rhaedalyn time to add more. “As am I, my dear.” He really did not like to consider what would have happened if he and Xyreith had not made it down to Katila for the flight. The lack of leadership linked to Aradissicath flying and the dragon that caught her had no effect on R’nya; he was far more worried about the prospect of someone else laying hands on the sweet goldrider. He had barely managed to mind his manners while she was playing Weyrmates with that little blue bastard. To have her and her dragon caught by another bronze? Outrageous!

In the darkness, R’nya’s face softened with affection as Rhaedalyn moved to shift the sheets, gentle amusement lingering under the surface though he made no comment, simply watched her attack the fabric between her fingers. He reached out gently to rescue the bedding from her attack, but paused as Rhaedalyn took to speaking softly, listening with his head tilted slightly. R’nya’s breath caught at the added confession, eyes wide as the words danced around him, and through his mind. The bronzerider’s face light up brightly, despite the darkness, and he shifted to sit up, maintaining the sheet across his lap purely for Rhaedalyn’s modesty.

“Never,” R’nya murmured gently, leaning over with light hands on Rhaedalyn’s waist and he lifted the woman bodily the short distance and into his lap. Arms wove affectionately around Rhaedalyn and he nuzzled the side of her neck, placing light kisses there before trailing along her collarbone and up the other side of her neck, pausing long enough to pull back and study her face in the darkness, making sure he had not misread the meaning in her words. When he was sure she was not going to attack him, he smiled crookedly and touched the tip of his nose to her own, then leaned in to kiss her affectionately.

Rhaedalyn gave a less than eloquent squeak of surprise as she found herself being lifted into R’nya’s lap before warm arms wrapped around her. She instinctively tilted her head away from the talented mouth that worked down her neck, giving R’nya more access to what he wanted. When he stopped to study her face, she stared back with wide-eyed shock for several heartbeats before reining in her shock over R’nya’s actions and her own enthusiasm for them. A small nod was given in encouragement before noses touched and she found herself falling into the affectionate kiss, cautiously lifting her arms to loop around his neck in what she hoped was encouragement.

While this was the first time she had been with a man, with a clear mind not entirely affected by a flight, since breaking up with Z’ia, Rhaedalyn wasn’t overthinking the situation or worrying she may do something wrong or upset R’nya. It actually felt rather nice to be with someone again and have such close contact with another human that clearly wanted to be with her. Even if it was only the lingering lust of Xyreith leading R’nya on, Rhaedalyn decided it was okay to enjoy it. It is, because it is R’nya. How many more times do I have to tell you this, dear?  Rhaedalyn found she wasn’t that skilled at mind speaking to her dragon while kissing and ended up waving one hand in a dismissive manner in the general direction the dragons were curled up at. She had had quite enough of the know-it-all dragon!

Still, a bit of her usual self-consciousness stayed close to the surface and when Rhaedalyn knew she would like more but wasn’t sure if she should push for it or if R’nya would want more than the kiss, she found herself once more trying her hand at flirting with a coy smile, “lead me, Ren, and I always willingly follow.”

R’nya had not associated flights with good experiences for a long time. That was not to say he had not had enjoyable ones upon occasion, to say otherwise would be quite dishonest. Rather, R’nya simply found them to be distasteful. He didn’t particularly enjoy losing himself and waking up to find someone he didn’t expect or wasn’t interested in being associated with in that way.

Finding himself beside Rhaedalyn post-flight was rather bitter-sweet to the bronzerider. While their last flight had certainly been painted a disaster by R’nya – he had been quick to flee that scene before it got worse – he was pleased the sweet woman was disinclined to send him packing this round. Nibbling his way along her jawbone, and breathing warm breath over her ear, R’nya rejoiced in dragonflight and the remaining dragon-lust that he presumed was what kept the goldrider in his lap. One arm moved slowly, allowing R’nya to caress down Rhaedalyn’s side and along the length of her thigh, stopping at her knee where he massaged gently.

All motion paused as Rhaedalyn pulled away enough to speak, pale eyes watching warily at first before relaxing as she smiled before speaking. Rhaedalyn was not the type to be cruel and R’nya knew enough about the girl to know that while her smiles could be nervous, they would never be a shield to nastiness – he was quite sure there was not an ounce of dirt in Rhaedalyn’s entire being. His eyes widened at her words, breath catching for a moment.

R’nya’s hand travelled gently back up Rhaedalyn’s thigh, stopping teasingly close he caressed the inside of her thigh with little sweeps of his thumb. His other hand gently tilted Rhaedalyn’s chin so he could be sure she was meeting his gaze in the darkness, voice a low murmur. “I’m not much for leading, love,” his voice held the soft smile that did not quite touch his lips. “I prefer my partner at my side.” Determined not to let Rhaedalyn puzzle over those words in that moment, R’nya stole her lips in a kiss, and carefully pressed her back to the mattress.

It was time to put some of his more interesting learnings from his trips North into practise. The bronzerider had never considered himself much of a lover, but one young woman in the North had done wonders for expanding his horizons, though her name and face were both far from his thoughts in those moments. Rhaedalyn was a shining centrepiece of his life, and R’nya hoped that someday he might have what it takes to tell the wonderful young woman just what she meant to him. In the meantime, he was going to take every glorious flight their dragons gave them.
