It had been a long day of Weyr clean up and prep; food had come in needing sorting, supplies had to be sorted and sent on their way to various parts of the Weyr, and she had somehow gotten glow duty. What this had meant was she spent the whole day running around the Weyr...checking this, delivering that. Eventually, it had come time for dinner prep, and she had been stuck in the corner with root duty. She didn't mind the activity, but it meant she was almost bone tired, and there was still the tail end of clean up from dinner. Sighing, Casa got to work clearing dishes and putting away what was left to deal with.

Once the dining hall had been cleared and cleaned up, Dae darted outside, ready for a break. She loved the days when time seemed to fly by, as it meant she wasn't left feeling bored. However, she was definitely ready to do something that didn't involve running all over the grounds. She left herself wander aimlessly at first, not sure what to do with herself just yet. She wasn't ready for bed; she wanted a soak to relieve sore muscles, but she'd prefer to save that until just before she went to lie down. Eventually, her feet and curiosity led her to the crafter's hall to see what the talented people of the Weyr may be doing with their evening.

When she first slipped in, it seemed creepy and still; she thought for a moment no one was about, which did happen from time to time. Still, this somehow inspired a sense of disappointment from her. She enjoyed watching people work on projects, as it was one of the only ways she could really ask questions or learn anything new without getting into too much trouble for being nosy. But after a moment, she heard soft sound echoing towards the door from the back. She perked up immediately, slowly padding towards the back to see who it was that was tuning about. She loved music.

Sitting in a half-hidden area of the Crafting Hall, B’jin was surrounded by guitars, strings, picks and broken bits and bobs. To his left, sitting carefully and tidily perched against the wall, was an aged guitar, looking perfectly serviceable and incredibly well maintained. That, however, was exactly the issue B’jin was currently faced with. The guitar in question was old, a gift made during Exile by his then-Weyrmate N’mall. B’jin had lost it for quite a while after stealing the candidate Allendris (now bonded to a lovely bronze, naturally) and it had taken a turn or three before he managed to get it back, not only from the North, but also from the ‘rider that had gone to get it for him.

No one knew that the instrument was made by N’mall, except for two people – B’jin, and N’mall – and at the core, that was the issue. Three days prior, when B’jin had been playing during dinner (something most of the harper trained were rotated through) N’mall had found the time to pass by B’jin, and murmur in his ear about how lovely it was to see him with his guitar once more. B’jin had just stared at the brownrider as he sauntered off, but the man had struck a chord, and B’jin had been trying to figure out how to replace his beloved instrument, without it being a kneejerk reaction.

Curse him, B’jin grumbled to Larrikith – not for the first time – as he fiddled with the tuning of another one of the less than brilliant instruments that were kept within the Hall for free usage. They were junk, and B’jin’s nose scrunched up at the mere idea of even being seen playing one of them. He’d rather put up with N’mall’s quips when the brownrider passed close enough by to murmur them, than be caught dead in the Dining Hall with one of those pieces of crap!

You’re going to have to make one, Larrikith supplied, and B’jin could tell her nose had scrunched in distaste at the thought. B’jin was fantastic with a pen, and he was great with his voice, but the making of instruments was definitely a hit and miss ability. Mostly, almost entirely, a miss. B’jin had made all of two serviceable instruments in his turns as a Harper, and they were barely that. The greenrider huffed, brushing a hand back through his hair and picked up the guitar that was the cause of all the issues. He refused to get one custom made, because people would ask why he was retiring his beloved guitar – it was certainly no secret that B’jin would gut anyone that touched it.

Looks like it, B’jin grumbled in response, placing it across his lap and adjusting his seat accordingly. A flutter of fingers over the strings produced a low, melodic sound, and B’jin closed his eyes and relaxed, leaning back against the wall and strumming a couple more times before settling on a tune and playing it through, his voice low and soft as he sung the lyrics. Because he was singing to himself, he didn’t project his voice, and was mostly unaware that he had gathered a little onlooker.

You have an audience, love, Larrikith interrupted at the end of the song as B’jin let his fingers fall still. Brown eyes fluttered open, surprise flickering over the man’s face before his features broke into a warm smile at the sight of the young girl. “Hello, Casa!” Still smiling, B’jin waved his fingers at the girl, inviting her closer. “Would you like to play?” She wasn’t about to be handed his baby, but there were an assortment of guitars scattered around him, and B’jin carefully pointed to one after a moment’s consideration.

“Pick up that one there, and sit like me.”
All R'nd based power playing is pre-approved.

As Casa crept closer, she noticed the music she heard was beautiful and perfectly on time, unlike most of the music enthusiasts around the Weyr. There weren't many who were perfect; most could carry a tune and play an instrument at least somewhat well. But she knew as soon as the song ended who it must be. B'jin had the most beautiful voice, and his fingers were deft and quick on an instrument. The guitar - for surely that song had come from a guitar - was cradled in his lap, almost protectively. She recognized it as the one he almost always used. It was a very pretty guitar.

As he turned to see her, she waved nervously. B'jin was normally one of the teachers for the traditional songs and teachings. He was a nice man, and she had nothing to fear from him. Furthermore, he didn't seem to mind that she had wandered in to listen. In fact, he was inviting her to play. Her face broke into a huge smile, and she nodded enthusiastically as she went to the wall to look at the guitars. How could she turn away guitar lessons? B'jin was the best in the weyr, hands down, and if he offered you a chance for music you just didn't say no.

She went to look at the wall of guitars and frowned. There were many options available. Some of them looked worn down and old; others looked shiny and somewhat new, but they were dusty, as if they were never used. It took her quite a while to go over the instruments that B'jin had been pondering not 10 minutes ago. As B'jin pointed to one on the wall, she gladly took it down. For her, it was slowed down - it had to be handled gingerly, after all. She was pretty sure she would be killed if anything happened to any of the instruments here, as they had so few.

Once the guitar was down off the wall, she carefully sat on the stool opposite him and brushed her soft tipped fingers over the strings. It made a soft little hum, but she cringed, wrinkling her nose softly. One or two of the strings must have been out of tune; it sounded discordant and ugly, compared to the one in B'jin's arms. "I...I think its not tuned real good," she muttered, blushing softly. "How do I fix it?"

B’jin nodded slightly in agreement and leaned over his own guitar, speaking lowly as he instructed the girl on how to tune the instrument – showing her the little dials on the tuner, and how to turn them slightly to change how tightly the strings were strung. He got her to pluck each string individually, and asked her if she thought it were flat or sharp. When she answered, he nodded or shook his head, and told her how to adjust the tightness. When all the strings were done, and the guitar sounded once more as it should, B’jin sat back with a bright smile. “Well done!”

Still smiling lightly, B’jin flicked his fingers over his own guitar’s strings, listening to the instrument hum with delight, and tossed the girl a wink. “I assume you know your teaching ballads,” he said lightly, scrunching his nose up playfully. “But can you read music?” He doubted it, but it was worth asking. She was a good little mimic, so B’jin figured it would be easy enough to show her how a tune was played and then get her to play it herself; he certainly could not be bothered to begin the process of teaching the child to read music.

“Valer- V’ler, sorry, wrote a couple of fun little tunes that I can teach you, if you would like.”

Casa watched carefully as B'jin led the exercise on tuning the guitar. Each string had a little peg towards the top that could be adjusted to tighten or loosen the string in minute amounts. Together, they slowly went through the scale, working on each string and to figure out which ones needed fixing.

She didn't quite understand what the meaning of flat or sharp was, but she could successfully identify one that sounded right when they got it where it needed to be. It was a fun exercise for her, as she could easily do it by ear, and by the end she felt a little bit more confident sitting besides B'jin, even though she was still a little shy about how good he was at music. Normally, she was the one who sat and watched and just kind of hummed along, never really getting the chance to learn much about how to Play. That was a Harper's job, after all.

When B'jin asked about the Ballads, she puffed up and nodded confidently - everyone should know their ballads, it was the first thing they learned! However, her new-found confidence ran away when he mentioned reading music. She could read just fine, but the squiggly symbols on paper that were supposed to indicate and teach how to make pretty music just gave her a headache to look at. She shook her head slowly, her cheeks coloring softly. At least there was other ways of learning, and she gladly nodded about learning the newer songs, glad they didn't involve having to read music.

“I didn’t think so,” B’jin smiled slightly, not at all phased but pleased the girl had opted to tell the truth. He was not a malicious person, and it would have frustrated him no end to try to lead her through music he thought she could read, only to find out she could not. It would make him feel like a bully, too, so he was quite pleased to avoid such a scenario! Her eagerness made the greenrider smile a little wider, and he settled himself down more comfortably and faced the girl, watching as she settled herself in turn.

“They’re not very long, but they are a little fast. I will play it through first, so you can hear how it should sound.” With that said, B’jin played through one of the little songs, not bothering to add the lyrics to it as his fingers danced over the guitar, and he flashed a grin at the girl. It was a rather fast paced song, and as such would make it easy to get finger tied, but she struck him as the type to enjoy a challenge and as long as she didn’t get frustrated and throw the guitar across the room, B’jin was quite convinced he’d be able to teach it to her. “We’ll go slower, until you get the hang of it, though!”

Shifting again, B’jin showed Casa how she should start off, which strings required her fingers to be present upon them, and where, before nodding. When she had that done, he slowly moved through the first few bars, giving the girl time to adjust her fingers to the odd angles required of playing the song, a quirky half smile on his lips as she did so. “Good,” he nodded, after her first completion of those bars; he did not take her through the whole song – better to learn it bit by bit! That said, B’jin lead her through them again. “Are you a Candidate for the upcoming Hatching?” he asked gently, correcting her fingers when she addled a couple of notes.

B'jin seemed pleased with her for being honest about her shortcomings; she wasn't super pleased to not be able to do it, but B'jin was accommodating. He adjusted himself to a more comfortable position, and she mimicked, not wanting to have her backside begin to ache while she was fiddling away with the guitar. As he began to explain the little tunes he was going to teach her, she carefully watched his fingers. They moved fluidly over the strings, barely a thought applied to making his fingers create such rich music.

When he started again and slowed down, she carefully worked her fingers over the strings. The chords were not completely unfamiliar, but she certainly could not go at his speed any time soon. Her fingers also ached - she didn't touch instruments nearly enough for her fingers to be comfortable with the odd stretching motions. But she mimicked him, mostly pleased. She got most of the notes right, going through it with him over and over for this little stretch.

When he asked her the question, it caught her off guard. Everyone seemed to be interested in her opinions or interests in Hatching or Standing. She frowned slightly, concentrating on correcting her finger motions when she made a sour note. "No," she finally replied, having gone through the section again. "I...I feel oddly about Hatchings." She began to pick through it again, eyes concentrating on the finger movements. "I know we need riders, and us 'Brats CAN stand, but...I don't know. I always figured that if I was meant to Stand, I'd know or someone would tell me. I don't know what a dragon would want with me anyway. I don't know if I'm the material needed. That's why we Search dragons, they know when someone's right."

"They sometimes miss people, too," B'jin put in, perhaps a little more dryly than he had intended and he smiled wryly at the girl. He didn't ofer up an explanation just yet. While it was hardly a secret that B'jin had stands impressed, he highly doubted that it was something a brat knew about. It was a rare enough occurrence that back before the plague B'jin had felt as if everyone had known and had some opinion to add to the event. Since the plague, of course, people had far more pressing issues than gossiping about how one had impressed prior to their long flight. I was simply enough that they were still alive. His smile altered to be more warm and invested as he began showing the child the next series of chords.

"If you are meant for a dragon, your dragon will find you whether you're on the sands or not." He eyed her thoughtfully for several moments. "But... Do you want a dragon, Casa?" It was rare, of course, but B'jin had met a couple of weyrbred children that hadn't actually wanted to Impress. Sometimes, they just didn't feel it was the life for them, or they were simply happy with the life they had lined up. He'd found that mostly it was a resigned attitude that came from beign close to ageing out, but it wasn't completely out of the question that the girl was simply not interested. Especially since she was a girl.

The child was bright, and full of curiosity - two traits both positive for a child of her at, but also not unusual. The intelligence was a bonus, though she would need to learn to curb in her curiosity if she wanted to really get anywhere in life. It was not easy being a girl, and B'jin was not a champion of women's rights; they had their place, and it certainly wasn't atop dragons! The idea of his little princess impressing a dragon - even a gold - made the greenrider's skin crawl. Dragon riding was a harsh, often cruel lifestyle that put men in positions they weren't pleased to find themselves in. Women were much softer, more delicate creatures. They simply weren't styled for such hardships.

All that aside, B'jin wasn't sure what colour he would peg the child for, at any rate. She didn't immediately strike him as one colour or another, and while it was true that the dragon was the one that did the searching, B'jin was usually a fairly decent guess! Do you want me to take a look? Larrikith asked quietly, and B'jin barely refrained from shaking his head. No, she's young yet. Her desires are likely to change. [larrikirth]I've always preferred older candidates,[/larrikith] Larrikith agreed mildly, ruffling her wings and changing the way she was positioned on the roof with a wriggle. Im aware, B'jin grumbled in the back of his mind, before ignoring Larrikirth's soft laugh.

B'jin turned his attention back on the young girl, replaying the series of chords again and nodding when her own fingers danced over the strings with growing confidence. B'jin loved children; many of them were sponges for knowledge - all you had to do was tip the bucket and watch them soak it all up. The light smile on his lips belied his placid pleasure for the quiet lesson.

She watched his fingers gracefully pass over the strings, precise and delicate yet comfortable. It was a bit hypnotizing to watch, really. Harpers just had a way with their words and their instruments, and it could bring out the fiercest or saddest or most delightful feelings from places you didn't even know you could find them. Painfully aware of the difference in skill between them, she once again copied him, taking it bit by bit. Once she thought she had it, she began to play through the piece from the beginning up to the point she had learned, to make sure it sounded fluid enough.

As her fingers mimicked his, she thought about the question before answering carefully. "I would not mind Impressing - I think it would make me an asset to the Weyr, and I would feel like I was contributing to something bigger and more important." She finished her playthrough of her current progress without any errors, smiling proudly before starting again. "However, I know that being in the ranks of the Weyrfolk is important work too. I suppose I'd be alright with either way. I'm not 100% set on where I want to go, just yet."

She paused while she kept thinking, letting her fingers rest to prevent them from getting too stretched or tired. "I think I could help the Weyr if I was a rider. But I think my official stance at this point is that I don't really care one way or another. Either route, I'm going to put all of my effort into it and find a way to be a strong, contributing part of my home." She cracked her knuckles before strumming her fingers over the taut strings, curious. "What's the next set of notes? I think I'm ready."

B'jin watched her play over the tune with a slight smile. While the girl wasn't exactly what he would expect to see in the hall, and B'jin's opinion on female artists was very limited (mostly to the negative) he could appreciate a child that was a quick learner and curious. Not really something he found ideal in a girl, but none the less not something to bat at too much. So long as the girl learned her place in the turns to come, he could appreciate her ability to collect random skills. Random skills could be very useful, and as many of the dragonrider population had learned, something that people should never take for granted. So many of them had died simply because they had very little idea how to look after themselves in the wild, and a dragon could only do so much to protect the one they love.

The greenrider nodded slightly at the girls words, impressed. "A wise outlook," he murmured as he played over the strings. It was an outlook that many of the younger occupants seemed to be oblivious too, both the stolen and the Weyrborn. The rivalries that had sprung up between the two groups were harsh and often difficult to cope with. B'jin had found the mixed attitudes of his weyrlings class, and especially prior to that when they were still all candidates, to be more than a little bit of a handful. Many of them were far too busy fighting and competing against one another to realise that more effort put into simply surviving would do them better, and leave them more time to enjoy life.

Getting his weyrlings to work as a team was a pain in the arse, and B'jin was not looking forward to trying to help the wingleaders integrate them into proper wings. There was so much strife between weyrbred and stolen, he wasn't quite sure how it would all work out, and while. B'jin could and even had been more than a little oblivious, his weyrling class had highlighted some of the comments he could recall D'ren bringing up that he had brushed aside. Not that it mattered now, of course. S'kef being in charge changed everything. B'jin's nose scrunched before his expression altered dramatically and he grinned at Casa.

"Of course! You are doing quite wonderfully." Still smiling, he began to show her the next portion, enjoying the flow of the music and banishing the less enticing thoughts from his mind. Weyr politics were no place for a greenrider even if his entire education had been about knowing everything of such things. It was a conflicting area to be locked into, but B'jin had long ago learned (and been taught!) that he was by far a greenrider now, and would never be the master harper he had dreamed of becoming. "Do you attend school still?" B'jin knew many of the weyrbrats stopped going when they hit their early teens, either because they were shoved into chores, or because they found them more satisfying than being lectured.

Casa shot him a sly look when he seemed to be focusing on something else, the look of thoughtfulness crowding his face for a couple seconds. He seemed to bat it away quickly and offered her a cheerful smile, which she replied to with one of her own. Who was she to ask questions? I'm me, she said to herself, but she shook that off. She liked B'jin, but he seemed to have the opinion that girls had their place, and he was already being kind enough to teach her something outside of lessons - best not to push her luck right this instance, but maybe ask him later.

And besides, he may not even tell her. B'jin had been known to be outspoken and loud, but that came with being a Harper. It had been made publicly clear, however, that the wrong words in the right place would get you a severe punishment. She cringed recalling what had befallen B'jin before, and she was reminded to be careful of where to talk and what to do. She refocused her attention on the strings, slowly plucking through the next set of chords.

As she forced her fingers to stretch and add these notes clumsily to the ones before, she nodded at B'jin, her eyes never leaving the strings. "I still go from time to time," she said agreeably. "But I like learning. Most of the 'Brats don't see a point. And those from North, they res-" She stopped, biting her lip and pausing. She blew the air out of her mouth, playing a little less awkwardly through the notes before continuing. "They don't think its necessary," she finished, shrugging softly.

B'jin nodded slightly. "Many of the Northern kids are already better educated than most of our population." It wouldn't do to actually state out loud that almost all of them were better educated than the average dragonrider, most of whom would likely have struggled with writing their name before the plague - many of whom would probably have no idea how to even hold a pen now days. He knew of many that could not, and quite a few who had to wait in the Dining Hall or linger around the announcement boards until someone with a more up to scratch education popped by to read off what was going on. It was undoubteldy why so many missed wing training sessions seemingly out of the blue.

"You missed a note," B'jin chided gently, having paused to listen to Casa run through the music; he played the piece she was missing correctly, then nodded with a pleased smile when she played it right herself. He certainly didn't doubt her desrie to learn, and he was pleased there were still those within the Weyr that found education to be something worthy of obtaining, even if such a person was only a girl. Smiling placidly, B'jin began leading the girl through the last part of the little song, playing the notes slowlly and then waiting for her to go over them herself, nodding slightly. She was doing well, for someone who had clearly had minimal (if any) previous access to a guitar.

R'nd is looking for you. Larrikith's voice entered B'jin's mind midlly, and the greenrider tilted his head to one side, blinking. Why? Because he wants your company? The green sounded amused and B'jin sighed softly, shaking his head as he trailed his fingers over the guitar in hiw own lap. "I need to go," he smiled slightly at the girl, studying her very quietly for a moment. "You may keep that one, for now, if you wish." B'jin was bemused, but also thoughtful. "If you practice, perhaps you will be able to play it at Turns End. It will need to be returned before that date, however." Nodding slightly, B'jin stood up and began to put his things away - some he handled delicately, while other things were kicked across the room to form a messy pile with little apparent thought.
