Tipsy Exploration [Ryvian]

The afternoon had started with boredom. This boredom had trailed Casa through most of the weyr until it had eventually led her to the Gather Square. And there she had found exactly the entertainment she had been looking for, in the form of a lazy weyrbrat. When she had approached Ryvian, complaining that there was nothing to do, he had been thoughtful enough to come to a conclusion. Little did Dae know, that solution had led to sneaking into the kitchen for a couple skins of watered down wine. They had grabbed their loot and snuck off towards the forest, Dae feeling thrilled. She felt like she was hanging out with the popular group of the weyrbrats.

As soon as they had started to head out to the quiet nook in the forest Ryvian had mentioned, they had started in on the wineskins. She had started with tiny sips at first - after all, wine was for adults. It was somewhat bitter and she wrinkled her nose at the taste. But Ryvian said this was a good way to make the adventure more fun, and after a couple large sips, she had to agree. Her body was warm, and fuzzy, and she felt herself giggling and relaxing. She was even bold enough to ask which of the twins he was. In the back of her mind, she was determined to remember. But then the wine helped her forget as they made their way to a quiet little section of forest.

Taking another sip from her skin, she beamed up at Ryvian as they got closer and closer to where his secret little grotto was. "This was a GREAT idea, Ryvian!" she giggled, eyes wide as she stared about through the forest. "I can't wait to..to see the river. It should be nice and quiet! We can laze about in the sunshine or something." She followed his more confident steps, stumbling over less obvious roots and rocks as they made their way. She realized she hadn't eaten much either, but waved it off with a wry grin. Today was about adventure, not food!

Maybe he shouldn’t have encouraged the drinking of the wine, even with it watered down. He could just imagine the flak he’d get from his friends when they heard he got Casa drunk and led her off to a secluded area. It wasn’t like he really had a strong defence either. Ryvian had thought it was a fun idea to introduce the girl to alcohol since he was about her age when he snuck in drinks with Nyvian so it was a rite of passage or something! He also wasn’t sure what kind of mischief they could get up to together so loitering around a pleasant area of the forest seemed like the best option.

“I’m full of great ideas, Casa,” Ryvian replied as he strolled across a trunk of a long dead and fallen over tree, over exaggerating the need to keep his arms out for balance simply for an extra show. Walking could be so boring so something had to be done to spice things up a bit! Unfortunately the log wasn’t long enough to cover the entire walk and Ryvian found himself meandering along on the ground beside Casa for most of the journey though Tryst kept appearing to circle around them before vanishing again and repeating the stunt so it wasn’t entirely mundane.

They reached the little clearing in no time at all though and Ryvian waved his arms around in a grand gesture of reveal. “Ta-da!” It wasn’t all that grand considering some of the other places in the area but it was quiet, had sun, shade, a river, and it wasn’t too popular. Most people had dragons or friends and lovers with dragons that could take them to the further out locations like the lake so little areas such as this were often overlooked.

Now he just had to figure out what to do to keep the girl entertained. Ryvian wasn’t entirely convinced lazing in the sun would be enough for her, especially while tipsy. He’d find out soon enough, no doubt! When Tryst appeared again, Ryvian patted his shoulder and the blue firelizard settled himself in, head peering in one direction and then other as if looking for their friends or something to do. Great; now he had two he had to keep entertained!

As she followed the older boy (whom she admired a bit, having seen him be so confident and mischievous) through the woods, her vision a little blurry around the edges but her spirits high, she noticed how exploratory this outing seem. Ryvian was expertly crossing rivers and guiding her through the forest. He was obviously a pro at finding his way here. She emulated him as best she could, being careful when she almost fell crossing the log.

Once they reached the spot, she stopped in her tracks and gaped. It was a lovely little place in the woods! It was secluded but simple; the river ran through, the trees shaded a lovely sitting section, and the sun dappled through the trees. "Oh Ryvian, this is awesome!" she said, all but bouncing on the balls of her feet. She dashed forward, tilting slightly to one forward, before sitting down with a grin.

She was excited to see what he had in mind. He was one of the more creative troublemakers in the weyr; he(they) came with a reputation all his own. She had seen him and his twin - or his twin and him - with the Indivara girl, and occasionally other older Candidates and brats. Adult adventures were much different than the pranks of the youngsters, but she imagined the twins had created trouble when they were her age. All kids got bored. It was a fact of life. So she was excited to see what sort of ideas he could impart with her. Or if he would start teaching her what the older kids did.

After a couple moments of just resting here, a firelizard popped in, and she gasped in delight. She loved these little buggers! She didn't understand how some people seemed to hate them. She stared up at him dreamily, watching him settle down as well. "Oh, he's lovely! I'd love to have one, they seem beautiful. What is his name?"

Ryvian laughed and waved Tryst over to Casa so she could see him up close or play with him. The blue was pretty friendly if he knew it was okay to interact with the person. Early in his life he’d tried to befriend a person or two that didn’t like the return of the firelizards and Tryst had been upset by the shunning he had received. Since then, he got permission first when Ryvian was around or observed someone for a bit first before making a call. With Casa, her enthusiasm was radiating off of her as brilliantly as her tipsiness was with the way she swayed and Tryst didn’t need any extra encouraging.

“His name is Tryst. That camping trip B’jin took all the Candidates on a while ago when firelizards were rediscovered? Nyvian and I were among the lucky ones to find eggs and get them to hatch and Impress to us. He has a green named Lace.” He loved both of their flitters but in a way he had been disappointed that they ended up different colours. If anyone paid enough attention, they could use the firelizards to tell them apart easier. Thankfully, the twins were often together and the firelizards liked them both so they switched shoulders regularly so in the end, even the clever and observant people still had to figure out their identities another way.

“Maybe we could go hunting for your own egg!” As far as he knew, a nest hadn’t been found in the clearing but it would give them something to do and keep them both mostly out of trouble. No doubt he’d hear about getting the girl drunk from her father if he let her drink too much more so nest hunting sounded like a good distraction.

Her eyes got wide at his suggestion, gaze flicking all over the floor of the forest area. An egg of her own! Now THAT was an idea. Taking another big sip from her skin, she giggled and stood, clucking sweetly at Tryst. "Tryst, you sweet little thing. You are gorgeous, yes you are. Do you want to help us find eggs?" She bounced up from where she had been seated, squinting her eyes as she focused on thinking.

Eggs. She had seen individual eggs come in before, and had heard of many, many different places they had been found. Her head was a little fuzzy, but she shook it lightly. Rivers, trees, sands - beaches were a thing, or so she'd heard in the past. But there weren't really beaches in the forest. Maybe along the edge of the river here in the clearing, that was almost like a warm sunny beach. She padded over, peering up and down and not seeing anything right off the bat. It inspired a little disappointment, but she shrugged, turning back to look at Ryvian. She'd follow his cues - he'd actually done this before.

As she followed over to him like an obedient puppy, wrinkling her nose at the lingering taste of wine. This stuff was bitter,  but kinda fruity. It was like fruit juice that had sat in the sun too long, or been left on a dusty shelf too long in the kitchens. But it was making her warm and cheerful, and she had to agree with Ryvian that it made for a good mood and a less boring view of the world. Maybe this was adults kept from going insane. "Lead on! How'd you find Tryst?"

Ryvian took another swig from his skin, enjoying the taste far more than his companion. He was used to wine, even Katilan wine though that was really all he had ever been allowed to have before mingling with the right older riders. Since it was likely Casa’s first time drinking alcohol, he’d have to keep an eye on the girl for when to take away the skin. He didn’t want to fish her out of the river or carry her drunken butt home because she couldn’t walk straight without tripping over her own feet. For now, she seemed fine if a little flushed.

“Others found the nest Tryst is from,” Ryvian laughed and patted his shoulder for the blue to come back to him. “I’ve never really searched for them before now. I had my blue and didn’t want another.” Firelizards weren’t nearly as much work as a dragon would be but it was enough to keep the carefree partier happy for the time being. He took excellent care of Tryst and made sure he never wanted for anything but anymore than Tryst and Lace around the hut would likely drive them batty and ruin any privacy.

Carefully scanning the area of land just off of the river, Ryvian moved along, wondering if they really would find something and how they would tell. Would it be obvious or would they have to look for little footprints? He probably should have asked the clutch hunters what to look for but Ryvian never thought he’d be in his current position. “We should probably watch where our feet land, just in case they’re only loosely covered.” How traumatizing that would be! Ryvian knew he’d feel utterly horrible if he accidentally broke an egg and he didn’t want to be the reason Casa was upset either. So his eyes were carefully checking the ground before he stepped while still glancing around.

It was only when Tryst picked up on Ryvian’s desires did he leave the man’s shoulder to zip about in his own search. A few minutes later and he gave a chirp, waited for Ryvian’s attention to be grabbed and returned to his favourite perching spot. With a curious frown, Ryvian carefully moved a bit further away from the river but where the ground was still considered more sand than forest floor where the sun reached unimpeded. “Casa, why don’t you come check out this area?” He saw what looked like a piece of shell poking out of the loose dirt and wondered if they had actually found a firelizard clutch. There was always the chance it was nothing more than a tunnelsnake or some other random creature Ryvian would rather never meet but he felt confident in this find.

Casa half-listened, her mind now determined to find a clutch. She would be the most popular weyrbrat of the group! And everyone could have eggs. She'd just bring the whole thing out and let them hatch and it would be like a mini Hatching but instead of dragons there would be firelizards and they could feed them as much as they wanted and it would be lovely -

Her hazy thoughts became derailed when Ryvian mentioned being careful to watch where they stepped. The thought of stepping on an egg made her almost queasy, and she shook her head a little to clear her thoughts. Refocusing on the task, she peeked down along the rocks by the bubbling water. Running her fingers over them, none of them felt like egg shards, just rocks. Disappointed, she turned to poke around tree roots. Maybe one of the firelizards had been crafty and settled it down in a little nook! But that wasn't too safe either, she realized, as an animal might eat them. Tunnelsnakes liked them, someone had told her once.

When Ryvian called to her, she perked up, flouncing over somewhat carefully. Tryst appeared to have found something, looking immensely satisfied on the man's shoulder. She kneeled back from where Ry was pointing, her fingers carefully brushing the dirt away to look. As her fingertips slid over the surface, they were somewhat soft, but had the smooth like ceramic feel. She squealed in delight, hands going to brush the dirt away with a surprisingly careful motion. As she moved the dirt, she picked up the egg carefully, eyeing it. "Oh! It's so precious." She laughed in delight. "Good spot, Ryvian!"

As she gently set it aside, she realized it hadn't been alone. Her fingers worked through the dirt and soil and rocks all around the nest, carefully setting aside clumps of dirt in favor for the softish little eggs. It took her a while, trying to figure out where they had been so carefully arranged. After much excitement, there were eventually 10 little eggs. Her eyes wide, she nestled them in a circle in front of her. "Ryvian, look! 10 whole eggs...that's incredible. You know the best ways to have fun!" She took another big sip of the wine, but her mind was clearer now. Firelizard eggs...she couldn't believe it!

Ryvian hadn’t been expecting to find a clutch at all but to find one that had ten eggs in it? His mind was simply blown. He hoped they were firelizard eggs anyway. He didn’t want to be the reason Casa’s spirits were lifted only to have her hopes crushed when they hatched into something less desirable – if they hatched at all. That was a terrible thought but Tryst crooned softly as he rubbed his little head against Ryvian’s neck and the man nodded. His flitter was a blue so there was a chance he was less reliable than a green or gold sniffing out another clutch but he felt it was a safe bet all the same.

“I’ve been told that a time or two before,” Ryvian laughed, glad the younger ‘brat had actually been having fun with him that afternoon. He hadn’t been sure what to do with her since he had grown out of playing most pranks and his new idea of fun was too much for a girl her age so he had compromised with sneaking drinks and going exploring. Whether Casa actually liked that part or not would probably never be known since Ryvian suspected it was finding the eggs that was the true fun part of the day. Still, it was better than nothing and his reputation of being fun was still intact.

“You know, we didn’t bring bags.” They had skins of wine but that wasn’t going to help carry any eggs. That left him with little choice but to strip off his shirt and toss it on the ground near the unearthed nest. “Whether you’re taking one or all of them, you’ll need something to help carry them and keep them as warm as possible until you can properly nest them again.” It wasn’t the best scenario since if they had actually planned on clutch hunting, they would have brought pots or large bags.

Ryvian crouched down a moment later, having reconsidered his own words. “I’ll help you bundle them up and carry them for you.” Casa was a bit too tipsy to entrust such precious cargo with. He wasn’t interested in another flitter since he had Tryst and didn’t want to lessen his chances at Impressing a dragon – it was a theory in progress since Rhaedalyn had an army and still Impressed – and he had no need of bartering even a single egg so there wasn’t a threat of him taking off with the clutch. He simply really wanted to avoid seeing the young girl upset over losing something that was currently making her beam so much.

"Oh, thank you!" She watched him strip off his shirt without a second thought, her eyes sliding briefly over him before returning to the clutch, her primary source of joy at the moment. Though he did have a nice body, for a boy. She was sure he got lots of attention from the fluttering, clingy women in the weyr, as well as some of the pretty candidates. How could he not? He was lovely to look at. She was willing to bet his twin looked just as nice. She smirked and shook her head, eyes rolling as she turned her attention back to the clutch.

10 eggs - she still couldn't believe it. No one found 10 eggs in one place. She would make sure to offer Ryvian his half if he wanted them - he and Tryst had help to find them after all! It was only fair. The others...what would she do with them? She couldn't handle 5 by herself, that was for sure. She could trade or barter them, but she had no idea what she would barter them for. Ribbons and silk were for girls, and new clothing she could ask for. Alcohol wasn't bad - she was definitely enjoying the wine - but not likely to be commonly used by herself.

She finally decided she would just put them out to Impress to others. If they wanted her, yay for them. If they liked others, doubly yay. She transferred them oh so carefully to the shirt, one by one to be nestled into the soft tunic. Once all ten were carefully tucked in around the sand where they had been found, she looked up at Ryvian for guidance from here. He seemed to be the leader of this exciting expedition. "Thanks for your help! What're you gonna do with your half of the eggs?" She wondered if he might use them as tools for finding some of the prettier girls. That was a very worthwhile use if you were an adult, she reasoned to herself.

Ryvian found himself smiling as he watched Casa gather up the eggs. He didn’t like seeing his shirt used for such a task but it wasn’t like he wore it much anyway so it was getting more use as a basket than it actually did as torso covering. There was such genuine happiness in the girl as she counted and repositioned the eggs and it made the older twin glad he had thought up the silly adventure into the woods. He knew he had a reputation for mischief but the heat of the day made him rather lazy and he couldn’t think of anything he’d want to drag a younger ‘brat into that wouldn’t gain her a whopper of punishment.

The fact that they found firelizard eggs was mind-blowing and when Casa offered him half, his mind was blown yet again. “Huh?” Ryvian elegantly replied as he paused in stroking Tryst along the neck. “I don’t need half. What would I do with them?” He was happy to have his blue and since Nyvian had a flitter as well, Ryvian didn’t think there was a need for more. Some of the residents had several to contend with but he wasn’t sure he wanted to deal with that headache. Trading the eggs was still a popular theme but, again, he didn’t know what he’d use them for. Special gifts for girls wasn’t something he did that much of to begin with since he liked to throw parties and be friendly in general to everyone around him. It would have amused Ryvian immensely that the innocent-looking girl before him had come up with the idea when he hadn’t.

“They’re all yours, Casa. I’ll carry them home for you and show you how to keep them warm so they’ll have a better chance of hatching but you can keep them or trade them as you like.” He crouched down to check on the way Casa had secured the eggs and nodded in approval. He wasn’t a master of knots or survival but improvising was something he could do fairly well and what they ended up with seemed like it would do just right.

Carefully Ryvian gathered up the bundle and stood up. “Ready to take them back?” It was best to bring the eggs back right away now that they had removed them from the warm nest of sand. He’d feel terrible for encouraging her to take them and then ended up distracting her further with other hidden enjoyments of the alcove. Like with everything else, he really wasn’t a master in hatching firelizard eggs either but he remembered enough of Nyvian’s suggestions and careful instructions that he’d be able to relay it all to Casa on the walk back to Katila. Given how tipsy the girl seemed, Ryvian suspected he’d have to tell her all again the next day as well but he didn’t mind.
