A Terrible Burden [R'nd]
« on: 01 Jun 2014 at 12:04 PM »
Those are becoming more frequent, the young blue dragon’s gentle, feminine voice brushed lightly against T’bia’s foggy mind as the boy came awake, drenched in a thin film of now-cold sweat; his stomach coiled unhappily with guilt and shame as he turned just enough to bury his face in his pillow. Jycenth soothed the youngster gently, wrapping him in the warm embrace of his love and affection as T’bia cried silently for a few minutes. The young bluerider’s shame was thick and heavy, and Jycenth could feel it weighing down on the boy, despite his best reassurances.

Come, Bibi; let us go down to the pools. He pushed gently, firmly encouraging his upset rider to struggle out of his tangled sheets, kicking them to the end of the bed and to drag on the clothes he had worn the day before; fresh clothing was gathered up for wearing after his bath. Jycenth crooned gently when T’bia appeared, nuzzling the boy’s cheek with his blue snout and breathing warmth and love on him, quite literally. T’bia clung to his dragon for a few moments, before scrambling aboard his eager companion and allowing the naturally cheerful dragon to lumber off towards the open pools that remained, mostly hidden within the out skirting trees of the new Weyr.

A soul shaking yawn stretched T’bia’s jaws as Jycenth made it to his pool of choice; it was a large one, though not large enough for the now grown dragon, it was one that was favoured by the youngsters that were still growing. Warm baths were preferred on growing hides than cold, though T’bia had never asked if that was because the dragonets were small enough to benefit from them, or if there were a true health reason behind it. He figured it was just kinder to the riders; Jycenth was as happy to bathe in the centre of the lake in the heat of summer as he was in the depth of winter.

Sliding ungracefully from Jycenth, T’bia set his fresh clothing to one side, and stripped off without bothering to see if anyone were around; while hardly as confident in his appearance as he could be, T’bia was not ashamed of it either. His ability to shove his foot down his throat had caused most bullies in his youth to bypass his physical appearance in order to target his hazardous speech patterns; as a result, he was far more worried about what might come out of his mouth, than he was worried about what others might think of his body.

After kicking his pants at Jycenth’s nose with a fleeting smile, T’bia slide with the same gracelessness into the pool that he had displayed dismounting his dragon. The action sent water lapping over the edges and stubbed his toe; the sudden sting brought tears to the boy’s eyes, and he bit his lip to keep from crying out as he hopped a little on the spot. Are you alright, Bibi? Jycenth’s gentle voice held the softest inflection of amusement, just the right amount to push the poor young man over the edge and he burst into tears.

Jycenth gave a squeaking cry of distress and inched as close to the pool as he could, scrambling so his chest was right to the edge, and his forearms reached out to encircle the boy carefully, crooning apologetically as T’bia clung to him and cried. His thoughts were a muddled mess, but Jycenth could clearly see that his amusement had not been the cause, simply a trigger, and he nuzzled the top of T’bia’s head gently and did his best to sooth the boy.

It was far too early in R’nd’s book for getting up despite turns of being bonded to a dragon that liked to pick on him and wake him at odd hours and assisting on occasion with the weyrling classes. Still, it had been a chore to get out of bed and moving to a point where he was able to have a fairly decent conversation with B’jin who was, as always, perfectly awake and bubbling over with excitement and enthusiasm for the day. R’nd felt bad that he remembered hearing B’jin discuss his plans for the day but couldn’t at that moment remember details. Hopefully they would come back to him after a nice soak in the pools.

Unlike some people who held onto their modesty, R’nd didn’t bother dressing for the jaunt down to the pools that he took by foot, leaving Ayyonth to his own morning routine. Instead, the bluerider had only a towel wrapped around his waist and boots loosely tied on his feet with a bundle of clean clothing in hand. It was sometimes a risk to walk around in such a state when friends liked to steal towels for fun but with most of the population now at Telgar and those remaining behind usually at their own tasks, it wasn’t too high risk anymore. Even with his groggy head finally starting to clear up – thanks to two cups of klah before leaving – R’nd would have been able to spot a troublemaker.

As he slipped into the area that housed the glorious hot springs, R’nd paused and listened for a moment with a frown. It sounded like someone was crying and that was definitely a distressed dragon he heard as well. Unsure if he should intervene in case it was a private matter that didn’t need his nose in it or not, R’nd finally continued on and frowned even more when the familiar blue dragon was spotted. His other suspicion over the crying had been that someone was hurt and seeing Jycenth cradling someone – obviously his rider – created a bit of panic in R’nd but he held it together as he dashed over to check on his young friend.

Before a word was said, he saw that T’bia didn’t seem to be hurt and Jycenth would have likely caused a bigger fuss if he had been. His boots were pulled off as he approached, carefully, not wanting to upset the large blue as he had no desire to start the day off flattened beneath a protective and startled dragon. The towel was tugged free as well and left to flutter to the ground as R’nd reached the edge of the water. “T’bia?” The boy’s name was spoken softly as R’nd slipped into the water, barely noticing how wonderful the heat felt as he waded a bit closer to where his friend clung to the kind dragon. As much as he wanted to pull T’bia close and chase away whatever it was that upset him, R’nd kept his hands to himself since Jycenth seemed to have the physical consoling under control.

T’bia squealed; Jycenth yelped, and water went everywhere as the dragon half fell into the pool, before scrabbling backwards while T’bia resurfaced, coughing and spluttering and staring in shock and not some small amount of horror, at R’nd. Huge blue eyes stared at the man that had mentored him through much of his weyrlinghood, and recently become a particularly prominent figure in the tidal wave of advanced pubescence. A hot flush crept up T’bia’s neck, and over his face; he was suddenly horrifyingly aware of his stuffy nose, his itchy eyes, and his stark nakedness (and R’nd’s!) and his blush intensified.

Jycenth, having scrabbled back out of the pool and a safe distance away, stood up and shook the water droplets from himself, before meandering over to the side of the pool behind T’bia. Picking a choice spot, the two-toned blue dragon sprawled out on his side, and twisted just so, making himself both comfortable and in a position to watch what would transpire without actively claiming attention. He was, however, also close enough to interfere, were such actions called for. He did not think they would be, but with T’bia, one could never be quite sure.

“R-r’nd,” T’bia stuttered his friend’s name, one hand appearing out of the water to brush over his face, and rake his sopping hair back off his face. Tugging on a lock of his hair anxiously, T’bia stared at his fellow bluerider for several moments before he realised he was giving his anxiety away and his hand fell down to splash back into the water. T’bia blinked owlishly, fighting down a renewed blush and sank down, so the water came up to his chin. Did you call him? T’bia’s words were half demand, half beg, as he glanced at his dragon, then back at R’nd.

I did not, Jycenth replied soothingly, though neither he nor T’bia could figure out if T’bia himself would be more or less relieved by that fact. It mattered not, in the end, and T’bia lowered his eyes and hugged himself in the warm water. “You’re up early,” T’bia murmured quietly, barely loud enough for R’nd to hear. He squirmed uncomfortably on the spot as his over active mind contorted the sentence and brought dreams and desires crashing back down around him. T’bia bit his lip, and continued to stare resolutely at the water below his chin.

All the flailing had left R’nd a bit wet as well and he wiped away his hair from his face and gave a perplexed look to the blue pair. That wasn’t the reaction he had expected but he supposed he had, in a way, snuck up on them in an otherwise private moment. “I prefer my name purred with a rolling ‘R’, not stuttered,” R’nd replied with a small smile, completely done out of habit for naturally being flirty. The situation didn’t seem dire so his mind worked on its own and latched onto something familiar that he could deal with. He was still a bit worried though since T’bia’s face seemed a bit red and the boy had obviously been rattled. Perhaps he had just spent too much time in the water and nearly fainted? Either way, he seemed a bit more pulled together and R’nd let it go for the moment, especially since T’bia had beaten him to being the one to ask questions.

“I am and it is far too early with the time I ended up falling asleep at,” R’nd laughed with a shake of his head. T’bia didn’t need to know all of the details so R’nd left it as was and didn’t state anything further on his evening activities. He lowered himself into the water and sat close to T’bia, mostly because they were friends and sitting near each other was normal but also because sharp eyes wanted to check over his friend one more time. “But I’m up, thanks to quite a bit of liquid assistance, and thought I’d start the day with a long soak.”

His eyes searched T’bia’s face more than anything else, having noticed the flush and red eyes. The flush was likely from the heat and eyes from the crying he had heard but R’nd was still concerned. “What about you? Are you well, T’bia? I didn’t mean to startle either of you with my arrival. I apologise for that.”

T’bia glanced up at R’nd, a fleeting look, before dropping his gaze once more as he drew his knees up under his chin and wrapped his arms around them. The youngster dropped his head, pressing his eyes into his kneecaps and trying to rid his traitorous mind of the images R’nd had painted within it. He puffed out a shaky breath, the water just a few hair’s breadth from the tip of his nose. T’bia didn’t see the ripples that spread out from the motion, for his eyes could see naught but the stars caused by continuing to pressure his eyelids into his kneecaps.

T’bia tilted his head slowly to look over at R’nd as the questions were asked of him, leaving his cheek in place of his eyes and blinking slowly to return proper sight to the abused muscles. “No,” T’bia answered after a thoughtful pause, his gaze drifting from R’nd to stare past him at the water’s surface. His voice was a very low murmur, barely above that of a whisper. “I…” He paused again, chewing on his bottom lip as he thought about what he wanted to say, and how to say it; it was an uncommon action for the young bluerider who was more prone to blurting out everything that came to mind, before it was given a lick of attention.

“I keep dreaming,” he whispered at last, his face flushing once more and he shook his head, burying his face back onto his knees. His offering was both unintentionally and purposefully vague; he didn’t want to explain himself, so terribly shamed by his mind’s wandering of a night… but T’bia had never been prone to lying, and R’nd was his friend… right? If nothing else, surely R’nd could offer him some misguided guidance. His following words were murdered by the close proximity of the water. “They ruin my sleep.” Despite his close friendship with R’nd, and the tight bond he had with his father, T’bia felt incredibly isolated; he didn’t know what he’d do if it weren’t for Jycenth..!

Jycenth crooned gently as he felt T’bia’s throat constrict and the emotions swirl around and attempt to breach the surface of the boy’s control once more. I will never leave you, T’bia, and nor will those who call you friend. Jycenth’s gentle voice brushed against T’bia’s mind, and the boy shuddered and gave a sniffle.

R’nd knew all about dreams that ruined his sleep. He was more inclined to call them by their proper name of nightmares but in the end, they were all the same. Bad dreams were bad and his friend was suffering from them. R’nd’s own varied based on recent events but they always had the same theme of being abandoned, forever alone, with no one that loved him. It was, if he allowed himself to think on it too much, one of the major reasons why he never allowed people to get too close to him. He had friends that he counted close to his heart but they never knew everything about him although if they left him for whatever reason, it would still crush him.

If T’bia was having nightmares, R’nd suspected it had to do with the landslide and all the lives that were lost and how everyone continued to have the moments of ‘what if’ wherein they lost someone special or their dragon. R’nd had lived through that first night fearing for B’jin and his dearest friends and then had to deal with the endless keening that always brought around his nightmares more strongly than usual as the added fear of Ayyonth vanishing on him joined in with everything else.

At T’bia’s sniffle, R’nd moved on reflex and wrapped his arm around his friend’s shoulders in a gentle embrace. He hate seeing friends upset for any reason and the desire to help that person in any way he could burned fiercely in him. “Did you want to talk about them? That sometimes helps those dreams to finally pass and give you peace again.”

R’nd’s unassuming touch, and the general closeness of the bluerider caused every little hair over T’bia’s neck, shoulders and arms to stand up on end and he shivered, drawing his knees closer in terrified mortification of his reaction, clinging to them tightly as his traitorous body revelled in the innocent companionship offered. T’bia’s breath caught in his throat, and he bit his lower lip as he once more pressed his knees into the back of his eyes. He was lost in a flurry of half-realised fantasies, in those few moments between R’nd moving to wrap an arm around his shoulder, and the soft questions falling forth between them.

T’bia latched onto them like a drowning man onto driftwood.

“I d-don’t think that’ll h-help.” T’bia’s voice was husky and a low murmur and he paused at the end of his sentence to clear his throat, though he did not lift his head nor look at R’nd. He had heard R’nd – and other riders – talk about ‘bedroom’ eyes though T’bia was quite sure he had no idea what bedroom eyes were in literal terms or how to give them. He was, however, quite positive he did not want R’nd to see any of what he was sure was all over his face in those moments – primarily his confusion and terror… and the… the… Lust, Jycenth whispered to T’bia, but his presence was riddled with patient amusement. T’bia had never been able to control his expressions, but he was good enough at hiding his whole face! That, however, would not hide the body-wide flush that was creeping up the back of his neck.

He dreams of Flying, Jycenth put in helpfully, his light and cheerful voice brushing lightly against the edge of R’nd’s mind for perhaps the first time since he had learned to speak privately. Generally, Jycenth preferred to help guide T’bia through speaking for himself, and making sure the boy said what he felt needed to be shared. The young blue was also well aware of the unusual quality of his voice, and while there were certainly those with just as unique tones, he was somewhat self-conscious of bespeaking others because of it.

This time, however, Jycenth felt interference was necessary. Conversation of past with Ayyonth had him recalling that the other blue’s rider could be a little slow on the pickup – and that was when people were speaking plainly. Jycenth was quite sure both humans would still be in the pool, and quite wrinkled, by the time T’bia finished dancing around the subject half hoping to lead R’nd astray and half hoping the man would magically read his mind and bring his dreams to life. R’nd could not read his mind, but Jycenth could. The blue’s eyes were alight with loving mischief as he watched. He was tempted to share the best bit, and watch water fly all around, but he would give T’bia a chance to share, first.

As soon as T’bia realised Jycenth had actually spoken to R’nd, however, the boy had groaned lowly, the sound riddled with exactly how mortified he was that Jycenth had shared that with R’nd. His arms lifted enough to release his knees (though those were nearly glued to his chest) and wrap over the back of his head, fingers splaying through his damp hair and T’bia was both thankful and distraught that the water wasn’t reaching high enough to drown himself. He was so embarrassed! Unseeing blue eyes, still pressed tightly to his knees, were hot with tears.

R’nd was trying to come up with a new way to help his friend since talking didn’t seem to be a viable solution when the gentle voice brushed against his mind. He turned to look at the young blue with a quizzical expression before glancing back at T’bia who seemed about ready to die of mortification. Jycenth’s words, T’bia’s reactions, and T’bia’s young age finally all mingled together to form some sort of idea in R’nd’s slow moving mind. His own adolescence had been a bit odd with living in exile with an older man that introduced him to everything he knew until they moved to Katila. R’nd had ended up being rather sexually active from that moment on and flights just happened to coincide perfectly with his lifestyle. It was hard to remember that not everyone was like him in that regard.

T’bia was adorable, friendly, and fun to spend time with but R’nd also knew the boy was shy and didn’t seem to interact with girls or boys all that much and certainly not on anything more than friendship level. R’nd still recalled the reaction at T’bia’s graduation when he suggested they go talk to a greenrider. He supposed the dreams meant T’bia was growing into a curious young man with budding desires. It wasn’t anything to be ashamed of!

R’nd let go of the younger bluerider and moved so he was in front of T’bia instead of beside him. Gently, hands worked to encourage T’bia to look up and give his poor knees a break from supporting his face. “There’s nothing wrong with that, T’bia. It’s normal. You’re normal.” They had had a lot of conversations during weyrlinghood where R’nd encouraged T’bia and assured him he was doing well and everything was normal so he had some idea about how to deal with his friend but it still felt a bit too much for R’nd to handle.

“It’s nothing to fret over. If Jycenth is ready to chase, I’m sure one of the lovely greens from your class wouldn’t mind seeing you in a flight.” R’nd smiled reassuringly and didn’t even let it falter when another realisation hit him. “If he’s not, is there someone you’re interested in?” Just because Jycenth had mentioning Flying specifically didn’t mean the dreams had anything to do with the dragons and flightlust. The young man before may have found himself interested in broadening his horizons on his own time.

T’bia’s glassy eyes lifted reluctantly from his knees at R’nd’s insistence, but his gaze was directed firmly to the side and away from R’nd. He could feel every spot where R’nd’s fingers had touched and surely the other could hear his heart pounding? His cheeks were very clearly stained with his distress, and he was fighting back the tears that wanted to fall, determined not to actually cry in front of his friend. Knowing he’d been crying, and seeing him cry were very different and T’bia did have some pride, somewhere. If it had not been completely shredded by his dragon! A sulky pout formed on his lips, traitor. Jycenth just shook his head and resettled himself placidly.

A wary glance was shot swiftly at R’nd, before darting off again to the side when the emphasis on normalcy was given. The follow up of Jycenth chasing caused T’bia to turn his whole attention back on R’nd, his expression utterly perplexed as he stared, momentarily forgetting the very closeness of R’nd that he had been starkly aware of just seconds before. T’bia’s mouth opened to retort that it wasn’t Jycenth that was the one with the issues, at present, when R’nd apparently decided to add that to the conversation himself. T’bia’s entire face was engulfed in flame, and his eyes widened in terror as his body tingled happily.

How was he meant to answer that? He’d always done his best to answer R’nd’s questions, but he didn’t want to answer that one, didn’t even know how to begin to answer that! His jaw clenched shut visibly lest he spill out words he was sure he would regret for an eternity (instead of the usual hours or days!) and his anxious gaze fluttered about, trying to find an escape. “No,” he squeaked, doing his best to avoid R’nd’s gaze when he realised that he could not escape. He couldn’t leave the pool, he was naked and he couldn’t think of anything more horrifically wrong in that moment than R’nd catching an eyeful of his butt – or worse! His traitorous body thought that was a fantastic idea, though, and T’bia shifted uncomfortably, wrapping his arms around his knees once more, clinging to them.

T’bia didn’t want this; no, no, no! He did not! Lies, Jycenth sung the single word playfully, and tilted his head to watch the two humans curiously. After a moment, he brushed soothingly against T’bia’s mind; the boy’s extremely fast thoughts and his high strung emotions were going to give one – or both – of them a terrible headache. It took several moments of Jycenth’s calming presence to relax the boy; his jaw unclenched and his avid stare off to the side relaxed to simply staring down at his knees. Jycenth crooned gently. “Yes,” he whispered, voice very nearly inaudible, and he quickly stared determinedly off to one side again, not at all willing to look at R’nd.

R’nd hadn’t thought he asked a tough question but watching T’bia squirm and turn various shades of red and seem to struggle with an internal battle made him correct that. He felt rather bad for saying anything and was about to comfort the boy and assure him he didn’t have to answer and change the topic entirely. It was obvious T’bia didn’t want to discuss such a thing with him and R’nd was starting to realise that while he may have been picking up on how to be a teacher and never had any qualms with assisting in sexual education when it came down to a hands on approach, he really wasn’t the right person to deal with budding hormones and practical dating advice.

The faint reply in the positive was almost missed from his own inner debate and attempt at beginning to say something else but catch it he did and R’nd paused again with a crooked smile showing. He wanted to encourage T’bia to approach the person he liked but hesitated, still a little worried over making his friend even more uncomfortable. Given the timid nature of T’bia, R’nd was surprised he had lasted as long as he had without trying to hide under the water or run away. It actually made the older bluerider want to protect and assist T’bia all the more but that only left him going around in circles as he tried to figure out how to do so with his lack of skills in subtlety. The hardest thing to remember was T’bia was younger and inexperienced. R’nd really didn’t have much to draw on from his own time at that age since he was in exile with one bluerider who had tended to all of his training in a variety of areas.

“I think life would be a bit dull if we didn’t have someone to admire whether from up close or afar,” R’nd started his attempt at calming T’bia down and once again point out there wasn’t anything to be ashamed of. He had no idea if he was on the right track but it had to be better than sitting in silence. “There’s something wonderful about the way that person can make you smile or catch your breath.” Though, he supposed, not so much when that person didn’t really notice the admiration or had someone else they were with. That could sting but at the same time, R’nd stuck by his stance that it still felt nice to have that light to look towards, especially on a bad day where a smile was needed.

“Something no one knows is,” R’nd gave a little look around them to give the illusion that he was worried someone would overhear the secret he wanted to impart only to T’bia and then leaned in a bit closer to his friend to whisper, “I wasn’t much older than you when Katila was established and I got my first glimpse of B’jin. I harboured a bit of a crush on him from that moment on and winning that first flight with him blew my mind. Kerrin found me utterly intolerable for days.” He laughed lightly as he leaned back again, shaking his head at the memory of how cranky Kerrin had been while he himself had been living in bliss.

“But really, other than with B’jin, I’ve always told someone when I admired them and I think you shouldn’t be afraid to tell the person you like either. Are they a friend? I bet they feel the same way.” T’bia was a great kid; how could anyone not like him? Sure, he had his quirks, but who didn’t? They helped build the man T’bia was and R’nd enjoyed spending time with him because of those unique traits and views on things and he couldn’t believe he was the only one to think that way.

T’bia shifted his gaze cautiously to look up at R’nd when the other began to speak, a worried expression on his face, eyes wary, and he gave a timid nod of agreement, but offered nothing verbal in response. His eyebrows furrowed more as R’nd looked around, but his eyes widened slightly when the other bluerider leaned towards him, his breath catching in the moment between R’nd’s motion and the whispered words sharing his secret. T’bia blinked, then gave R’nd a sceptical look.

He considered the words he had been given, gaze dropping down to stare at the tops of his knees with a sad frown. “I don’t think so,” he said firmly, unable to stop replaying R’nd’s light words over and over. R’nd helped him, and T’bia was sure sometimes he put up with him, but he had definitely never alluded to anything like admiring him. His lower lip trembled before T’bia sucked it between his teeth and bit down on it. His shoulders slumped dejectedly and he slouched himself lower into the water, refusing to sniffle again.

As the silence stretched out, T’bia took a deep breath through his nose, and breathed it out slowly as he glanced up suddenly at R’nd, his sceptical frown once more contorting his features. “…But he’s so old!” T’bia put in innocently, backtracking on their conversation, completely unaware that the window between R’nd and B’jin’s years was much the same as those separating himself and R’nd; he himself had been an infant when Katila was formed. “Why?” he asked, genuinely curious.

R’nd stared in confusion at T’bia’s outburst. Was the man he liked really so old they couldn’t be together? Age rarely factored into R’nd’s way of thinking, especially when dragonriders were discussed. Their life spans were extended and aging slowed thanks to the wonderful creatures and someone with twenty turns on him could look the same age. Really, to R’nd, it came down to interactions and how well they got along. One of his best friends, Kerrin, was younger than him and they usually had an easy friendship and understanding of each other. So why was T’bia so concerned about the age of the person he liked?

I believe he’s referring to B’jin and why you want to be with someone so much older than you,Ayyonth replied with a far too chipper tone in his voice as he made himself known in R’nd’s mind. I had been enjoying your time away, Ayyonth, and he’s not that much older! R’nd bristled slightly at his dragon’s interpretation of things and then frowned when he realised Ayyonth may have been onto something. It wouldn’t have been the first time someone had pointed out the difference in ages but R’nd barely noticed and tuned out such comments. Now, however, he had his friend pointing it out and asking why he liked older men.

R’nd moved back to sitting beside T’bia so his back could rest against the edge of the pool as he considered the obviously genuine curiosity. It was asked so innocently that it helped remove the shock and sting of the comment enough that R’nd currently hadn’t moved into flailing and trying to escape the conversation. “I’ve never noticed his age,” he replied truthfully and didn’t think he even knew B’jin’s actual age. You know you’re roughly the same age as Larrikith though,Ayyonth again assisted in the conversation and R’nd scowled inwardly at him and tried to block him out. Go back to harassing someone else, he hissed before doing his best to tune out the fact he had been ignoring. B’jin had Impressed close to the time he had been born and that truly did put some interesting numbers on everything when R’nd also recalled B’jin had already been an established Harper at the time. He shifted uncomfortably and did his best to keep from panicking as his mind tried to do some math by continuing to talk.

“When I first saw him, I had been physically attracted to him but he also embodied everything I thought a dragonrider should be. After finally having a chance to chat with B’jin and spend time with him, I became to truly like the man he was. Age never factored into it.” He suppose he had sort of been conditioned to have an interest in older men as well thanks to his re-education in exile and surroundings. He glanced at T’bia and wondered if he needed to know all of that as well and then decided it could possibly help. He was a bluerider now and interesting circumstances were bound to pop up somewhere down the line and he needed to be comfortable and prepared for anything.

“For quite a while, older was essentially the only option. I was in exile with only my Searchrider, R’jit, and a bond formed between us. At Katila, almost everyone originally was older than me or close to my own age. I never thought being attracted to someone five or twenty turns older than me was odd.” He shifted so he was still sitting beside T’bia but was now facing him full on again and cocked his head to the side with his own curiosity showing through. “Is the person you like older than you, T’bia? Or perhaps the same age and that’s why you think I’m odd?” His smile showed he was teasing and not at all offended if that was the case.

T’bia watched as R’nd moved away, blue eyes wide and worried he would upset the other with his question and he stiffened slightly. He had seen the way R’nd’s face had gone slightly blank, the most obvious indication that he was speaking with his dragon. Was Ayyonth about to swoop in and R’nd storm off? T’bia hugged his knees to himself once more and watched R’nd dejectedly, waiting for Ayyonth to appear above them. He was confused for a few moments when R’nd instead made himself comfortable just slightly off to the side by him. T’bia blinked, but did not begin to relax until R’nd started speaking.

The words that were offered to him were given great consideration, with T’bia chewing silently on his bottom lip. He supposed that made sense, though it was still a bit strange! R’nd is quite a bit older than you, too, Jycenth put in, taking great pains to make sure he definitely only spoke to T’bia. Despite not often speaking to others, he was still leery of accidentally sharing something without meaning to! It was one thing to spill the beans on purpose and watch on with amusement; it was quite another to also be caught unawares! He gave an amused chirp when T’bia flushed and looked back at his knees in response.

T’bia lifted his gaze as R’nd picked up speaking once more, and nodded slightly; he had never truly thought about that and R’nd made a point. Being picky was only an option when it was an option! He would have giggled at his own thought, but R’nd’s question came to life then and T’bia squeaked instead, eyes wide. He had almost forgotten that topic, and had subconsciously hoped R’nd had forgotten it too. Pouting, and refusing to look at R’nd, he nodded slightly. Then he frowned, and turned his gaze back on R’nd with a scowl. “You’re not that odd,” he said empathically, completely indignant.

Jycenth chirped his amusement again.

R’nd gave an honest and joyful laugh at T’bia’s reassurance and grinned at his friend. “Well, I’m glad you don’t think I’m too odd. I don’t mind being a bit odd though,” he leaned in, eyes twinkling with delightful mischief as he whispered, “it adds to my charm and appeal.” With a softer chuckle, R’nd sat back again and sank a bit lower in the water so it was up to his chin. He’d get around to actually washing eventually but it was nice to simply enjoy the heat soaking through his muscles and working away any negativity and stress he may have been carrying without realising it. The fact that he had a friend there with him was an added bonus and R’nd was already counting the day as off to a great start.

“You know you can always come to me for anything whenever you need me, right? Even if I am odd? Although, I think we should really change that to ‘unique’, don’t you think?” R’nd asked after a moment, glancing back at T’bia. The poor kid was likely going to cramp up if he continued to hug his knees like that so much! R’nd was tempted to reach out and pull his feet to straighten him up again but resisted. He had teased him about the crush – even if accidentally – and that was enough for now, or even the full day. Still, he wanted to make sure T’bia knew he had a trusted friend to turn to regardless of situation or the time. R’nd knew he wasn’t an expert in all areas of life but he would do his best to assist T’bia even if that meant asking around for answers himself.

“Yeah,” T’bia muttered quietly, staring down at his keens with the occasional quick glance at R’nd from under his lashes. “I know.” But that didn’t make it easy, it just made it an agreed upon fact. He knew – had known ever since well, some distance into Candidacy – that R’nd was someone that could be trusted, and could be approached about anything, or apparently, almost anything. T’bia flicked the water with his forefinger and allowed R’nd to change the subject.

Amused blue eyes peered up at R’nd from under his lashes and T’bia tilted his head just slightly. “Definitely ‘unique’,” he agreed, his voice just bordering on the edge of dry as before flashing a cheeky grin. R’nd was not the usual for a bluerider, especially not those examples set by Katilans, something T’bia found worthy of striving for since he had Impressed a blue of his own. Not that all blueriders were bad, or even not-good, but well, if he had to be like anyone, he certainly hoped he could be as amazing as R’nd some day!

“So why are you up so early?” T’bia asked, voice riddled with curiosity as he tilted his head at R’nd. Anything to keep the bluerider from asking him any more questions, and certainly to keep him from taking note of the fact that T’bia was still very much scrunched up. He couldn’t wash with R’nd – R’nd – sitting right there and practically watching him, even if T’bia was quite sure R’nd was far too polite to actually do any such thing. But that wasn’t the point! T’bia was very thankful the warm water had kept his cheeks flushed, otherwise he was quite sure he’d be as red as could be and that would definitely spark R’nd’s curiosity!

“I’m glad we’re in agreement,” R’nd chuckled as his definition was changed from ‘odd’ to ‘unique’ as that was something he could live with. Both essentially meant the same thing in the grand scheme of things but at least in one phrasing, it sounded like he was one of a kind and it was hard to duplicate something amazing. He flashed a grin at T’bia but didn’t say anything further, somehow managing to keep his ego in check. It was likely the soothing water’s doing.

The genuinely curious question a moment later sent R’nd’s gaze back onto T’bia as he gave a wicked grin. “I have a date,” he added, purposely being vague to play on his friend’s curious nature. He knew that answer wouldn’t be enough to satisfy T’bia and he waited several heartbeats before the grin turned into a far more innocent smile as he finally elaborated. “My dear sweet Lady Rhaedalyn asked me to go flower-picking with her this morning. Who am I to say no to such a request? Though it is beyond me why she didn’t ask R’nya or Z’ia this time.” He wasn’t normally much for the activity but R’nd was always up for doing things with friends and it had been a while since he had managed to snag some time with the young goldrider for one reason or another. Though it really did gnaw at his own curiosity as to why she was asking him when she had people that usually went with her.

There had to be something and not even the ever present gossip mill had anything concrete to go on this time. He supposed that was a tragedy of a smaller community sine there were less eyes and ears to catch all the details but on the other hand, a smaller community should have meant it was easier to hide something. All R’nd knew was that any time he saw Rhaedalyn and R’nya in the same room together the girl quickly averted her gaze from the bronzerider and excused herself soon after. The poor man probably finally said or did something that upset at least one member of the Golden Girls and now he was paying the price. It was something R’nd both admired and pitied R’nya for.

“We’ll probably grab some berries as well if there are any at this time of the season. I’ve never had much of a mind for herbalism. I just enjoy eating the treats made from them,” again R’nd laughed and finally reached for some sand soap to begin lathering up. He was enjoying the soak but he didn’t want to risk keeping Rhaedalyn waiting or to keep T’bia in the water longer than needed. The boy would likely find it rude to leave first despite arriving first so R’nd took it upon himself to guide them gently to the point of vacating the glorious little pool.

T’bia’s eyes widened dramatically as R’nd answered the question asked, T’bia both surprised by getting the answer so quickly and easily, but also by R’nd’s frank phrasing – wasn’t he supposed to avoid those types of words? The ones that sounded all serious and stuff? T’bia’s expression when R’nd elaborated further to name his date as Rhaedalyn was probably priceless: an innocent gawk as he tried to put those pieces together, and failed rather wonderfully as the other rider continued to speak.

“Maybe she wants to talk to someone, and it can’t be either of them?” T’bia hazard with a sceptical look, speaking very slowly as he tried carefully to think about the words before they left his lips, lest he embarrass himself. In the end, he gave a confused frown to R’nd at the end of the question, then shrugged aimlessly. It was not his date to worry about, though flower picking did not sound nearly all that terrible! T’bia usually picked things that were useful – namely, fruit – but he found such tasks pleasant enough and imagined that picking flowers could not be any less so. Besides, flowers had this delightful tendency to smell wonderful, even if you could not always eat them.

A grin crept onto T’bia’s face at the mention of berries, a bright, enthusiastic expression lighting up his eyes. “Berries are wonderful,” he gushed, tipping his head back in delight before tilting it to one side and watching R’nd. “But I dunno if you’ll find any.” He shrugged again, having no more idea of when the berries were around than R’nd did; honestly, T’bia couldn’t even say if berry treats had been included in the general menu of late or not, either. He grinned impishly suddenly. “Maybe you’ll find another firelizard!” He giggled, both naughty and pleased with himself.

R’nd was washing the soap from his arms and torso when the comment about finding another firelizard came about and he froze to stare in wide-eyed shock that quickly turned to innocence, “if I do, I hope it is still in egg form so I can gift it to you.” That was all he needed; another firelizard! One was already more than enough and he purposely did his best to avoid thinking about Rell lest he call him over. The sweet and cuddly blue was still back at home, curled up in the recently vacated bed. B’jin’s dislike of having flitters in the bedroom during intimate moments and the bed in general often resulted in Rell hopping from his little bed on the table to the bed when the greenrider was gone. Last R’nd saw, the little guy was still sleepy and happy to stay in bed even as he headed off to bathe. There was no need to bring him over, likely in a panic, and have him splash around.

“For now, I think I’ll be happy to simply find those berries that have left us both wondering if they exist right now or not.” He would definitely be okay with plucking a bowlful and eating them as Rhaedalyn skipped around gathering flowers. T’bia was right in one thing though; the girl likely wanted to talk or at least spend time with a friend that didn’t judge and expect talking. R’nd was great at listening to others and could sometimes even provide guidance but to have the young goldrider come to him for advice instead of her dear R’nya seemed a bit unlikely. He’d find out soon enough and hopefully neither of them ended up traumatized from their outing.

Turning around so his back was to the centre of the pool, R’nd leaned back to wet his hair and then began scrubbing the soap through. His hair was fairly gorgeous on its own but they did still require some loving attention and they received it with massaging hands that were soon rinsing away the suds. R’nd gently combed his fingers through his locks, making sure nothing ended up knotted and glanced back at his friend. “And where can I find you later today so I can get that hypothetical egg to you?”

“Really?” T’bia’s wide-eyed gaze was both shocked and delighted as he stared at R’nd in surprise. He knew all the Candidates were supposed to get eggs now – and indeed, T’bia had gotten an egg for himself before he had Impressed Jycenth, but the little had died, before it ever go to Hatch. T’bia had been heartbroken and gone out of his way to find a nice shy dragon to put the egg between without airing to the entire world how he had murdered a baby firelizard by letting a tunnel snake get to it. Some of the others had ended up with dud eggs, and a couple of others had been gobbled up, too. No one had ever asked T’bia why he did not have one, but, before he Impressed Jycenth, no one had really even known he existed. T’bia preferred that no one had, though. He still felt awful.

The question started T’bia from his daydreams – the boy having run off mentally and totally missed R’nd’s babbling about Rhaedalyn and berries – to blink in surprise at R’nd, then blush. Jycenth, taking pity on his poor rider, rumbled with amusement as he filled T’bia in on what R’nd had just said, and T’bia wondered how he had ever survived without his beautiful, wonderful, amazing dragon. Jycenth rumbled in amusement, but his eyes shone with embarrassed pride and he turned away bashfully. T’bia grinned at his dragon, and then turned his attention back to R’nd.

“We’re going hunting, ‘cause Jy hasn’t eaten in a couple days and then Papa is taking us flying.” T’bia grinned brightly, “He said he found a meadow, and that there are wild runners in it, and that some of them have babies and that one is a really different colour! We can only take the dragons some of the way, and then we have to hike, but Papa said he’s been watching them for a while now and he knows a good spot to sit and that they don’t mind if he’s quiet so we have to be quiet and-- ” T’bia flushed crimson as he realised he was babbling excitedly and he ducked his head. “And we’re taking a lunch,” he added in a mumble.

R’nd had long ago become accustomed to T’bia’s babbling when he was excited and only smiled as the boy continued explaining what was in store for his day. There was a time back in Candidate classes that R’nd always went home wide-eyed from babble overload and at the same time was exhausted at having to deal with the questions and working a bit harder and longer at making sure Thobiahz knew everything and could handle the dragonet he soon Impressed. R’nd couldn’t pinpoint when it happened but somewhere along the journey he took a shining to the boy and all of his quirks. T’bia just loved to learn everything he could and his enthusiasm took over a tad too much at times. It was the same way when he was talking about something he liked.

It was also great to hear T’bia was spending time with his father. R’nd always worried their relationship was strained for whatever reason was decided on that day but it seemed dear old dad was accepting his son that was a bluerider and a member of a wing that wasn’t doing as poorly as T’bia always feared he was. “That sounds like an excellent day, T’bia,” he replied genuinely when the flushed boy finally finished. “You’ll have to tell me about the runners later, especially the one that’s a different colour. We unique characters have to stick together.”

R’nd slipped back down into the water up to his neck as he settled in beside T’bia once more. “Maybe I should send Ayyonth with you so you can deal with his antics for the day. Jycenth can keep him under control while you and your dad venture off to the runners and I can have a semi-quiet day with a pretty lady,” R’nd chuckled at the idea that came to him when Ayyonth started teasing him about Rell waking and how he was considering sending the flitter to the pools instead of telling him to eat. It didn’t really matter though since he had to be getting out soon anyway to grab a quick bite to eat before greeting Rhaedalyn for their day out together. Rell was invited to that outing, however, since the blue was a bit shy and needed to make friends. Rhaedalyn came with three that he could play with and that would hopefully make everyone happy.

T’bia lifted his head just enough to peer up at R’nd from under the fringe of wet hair, and a thick line of lashes. As the bluerider’s kind words registered, T’bia flashed a bright grin and lifted his head up fully, blue eyes sparkling as he giggled. “Of course,” He did like the concept of ‘unique’ over ‘odd’, especially since now it was being used as a descriptive for the little baby horse! He giggled again, with just a hint of naughty, deciding he would not share that particular point with R’nd.

The youngster’s head tilted as R’nd re-joined him in the water once more, and his lips puckered up, and he scrunched them to one side thoughtfully as R’nd spoke. “I’m not sure Jycenth can keep Ayyonth and Quendylth under control,” T’bia spoke very seriously, looking at R’nd sceptically, though blue eyes sparkled playfully with his teasing above his comically straight face. “He’s a good boy, but I think two old blues might be more than he can handle.” His grin broke through then, wide and cheerful at his clever teasing.

Old!Ayyonth had been peeking in on R’nd, making sure he wasn’t causing too much trouble for the adorable pair and was suddenly finding them less than wonderful in that moment. He most certainly wasn’t old. Old was a term for other people they knew, not him. In comparison to you and B’jin, I’m a spritely young boy.R’nd choked back surprise and then laughter as he shook his head at his dragon’s words, staring off in the direction the blue was somewhere lounging. He didn’t want T’bia to think he was laughing at him! “That’s true. My old blue wouldn’t be able to keep up with Jycenth and needs his afternoon naps after all. I guess we’ll leave him to his own devices today.”

With another soft chuckle, R’nd finally stood up, still not at all aware of T’bia’s awkwardness with nudity and him. He climbed out of the pool to fetch his towel and leisurely dried off since despite the plans for the day, he wasn’t in a hurry, having given himself enough time to begin with. Satisfied with the state of skin, R’nd slipped the clean pants on, tossed on his boots, and draped the towel over his head to continue drying it momentarily. “Don’t linger too much longer or you might miss the runners.” R’nd chided lightly with a warm smile in place. “And remember to find me later and we’ll swap stories of our big days out.”

R’nd waved at the pair and headed back to his home to continue getting ready for his flower-picking date with Rhaedalyn.
